The history of botanical research into thermophilous grasslands in Bohemia from the beginning of the 20th century is followed. The research is documented from different time periods and different landscapes. A range of studies are discussed and biographies of the main authors are presented. A bibliography of unpublished dissertations and student theses deposited in the library of the Faculty of Sciences of Charles University Prague is included. The summarized results inform of flora and phytogeography, phytosociology, Holocene development, ecology and life strategies of grassland species. Thermophilous grasslands thrive on steep southern slopes of various rocks. They have been maintained by grazing and also susceptible to human impact, both directly and indirectly.
