Josef Holub (1930-1999), one of the greatest figures of 20th century Czech botany, created a large herbarium collection of vascular plants during his life. The collection contains 80,502 specimens. The specimens were, however, only provided with provisional labels, written in almost illegible Holub´s handwriting. The entire herbarium collection had to be re-labelled, Holub´s original labels rewritten and collection sites localized more precisely using Holub´s field records and reports kept separately. J. Holub primarily gathered taxonomically difficult groups of plants, e.g. Rubus (8 000 collections consisting of 25,148 specimens), Crataegus (2,825), Carex (3,493) etc. J. Holub´s collection is now preserved in the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, Czech Acadamy of Sciences, Průhonice, Czech Republic (PRA). The collection will be available after classifying and integrating it into the main collection of the PRA herbarium.
