Four new localities of Cladonia portentosa, so far known only from two localities in the Záhorská nížina lowland in Slovakia, were discovered and one historical locality was confirmed. The species is predominantly confined to terrestrial, especially sandy, habitats and requires high light availability. It is listed as endangered species in the Slovak Red List. Newly discovered localities and historical context of the species occurrence in the region are described in more detail.
