Following up on the article by Magain et al. (Persoonia 51, 2023), we decided to revise specimens filed as Peltigera neopolydactyla in Czech herbaria, originating both from the Czech Republic (the prevailing part) and abroad. Fifty-three vouchers were examined using a combination of thin-layer chromatography and morphological identification, in eight cases supported by ITS sequence barcodes. A number of 31 specimens belonged to the recently described P. vitikainenii, which is rare in the Czech Republic, known only from the Šumava Mts, Novohradské hory Mts, and historically from Šumperk (N Moravia). We also report it as new to Romania and Slovakia. The species prefers humid old-growth forests in mountain areas. Only one (historical) specimen from the Czech Republic was revised as P. neopolydactyla s. str., originating from the Šumava Mts (Mt Jezerní hora). This represents the first European record of this boreal species confirmed outside the northern part of the continent. The revision also yielded misidentified material belonging to Peltigera polydactylon, P. hymenina, P. occidentalis, P. horizontalis, and P. degenii. We discuss the identification of these species, which is often very difficult without TLC or DNA analysis.
